EVALUATION OF SILVAMIX® FERTILIZER EFFECT ON SPRUCE SEEDLINGS (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) IN CULTIVATION OF FORESTS IN THE WESTERN SUDETEN - SZKLARSKA PORĘBA (1993 - 1994)

Research conducted by the Department of Soil Science and Fertilization at the Forestry Research Institute in Warsaw.

SILVAMIX® of a composition of N - 10.3, P2O5 - 16.2, K2O - 6.2, MgO - 5.0 was applied in the spring of 1993 in a quantity of 4 tablets per spruce seedling:

  • two-years (test plot 1 - Szklarska Poręba, Zagórze)
  • three-years (test plot 2 - Szklarska Poręba, Zagórze)

The positive effect of SILVAMIX® is shown below:

Year?s growth in height - in cm and%

Test plot Year Control (cm) SILVAMIX? (cm) Growth as against control (%)
1 1993 6.2 8.5 37.1
1994 6.8 8.8 29.4
2 1993 7.3 10.0 37.0
1994 7.9 9.7 22.8

The contents of nutrients in spruce needles - in% 2 years following fertilizing - 1994

Test plot Age of needles
in years
N P K Mg Ca S
1 1 1.39 0.17 0.43 0.09 0.13 0.093
Control 2 1.23 0.12 0.40 0.07 0.25 0.090
1 1 1.68 0.23 0.51 0.12 0.24 0.086
SILVAMIX® 1 1.41 0.20 0.48 0.10 0.46 0.081
2 1 1.45 0.19 0.49 0.10 0.14 0.091
Control 2 1.24 0.14 0.45 0.08 0.27 0.087
2 1 1.75 0.25 0.53 0.13 0.25 0.085
SILVAMIX® 2 1.40 0.20 0.50 0.10 0.50 0.078

As is clear from table 1 the spruce seedlings on these plots reacted with a 37% increase in the year?s growth in height - 1 year after fertilizing with SILVAMIX® (on both test plots) as against the control (unfertilized) and with an almost 30% increase in the year?s growth in the second year following fertilizing on plot 1 and almost 23% on plot 2.

The results of analysis of the nutrient contents of the spruce needles (N, P, K, Mg, Ca) given in table 2 (analysis performed 2 years following fertilizing with SILVAMIX®) show their higher intake following fertilizing as against the control (unfertilized) and testify to the favourable nourishment of the seedlings following fertilizing with SILVAMIX®. At the same time a minimal reduction in the intake of sulphur can be seen in the seedlings on the fertilized plots.
